Final Reflections

Image
The semester has come to an end. It has been a very interesting several weeks in this class! Ultimately, I have learned a great deal of new strategies for writing a paper. I think my favorite part about this WRIT150 class was how we broke up our writing project into several different assignments. With this method, I was really able to focus on certain segments of my writing without getting distracted by the idea of completing the entire essay at once. Another aspect I appreciated was the peer editing. It was quite helpful to have classmates act as the audience of the paper; it allowed me to see my writing from others' perspective and get an understanding of what I needed to improve on. Initially, I was not much of a huge fan of the peer editing because I'm somewhat introverted. However, I became more comfortable as the class went on. My classmates' opinions were definitely helpful in the long run and collaboration became something I looked forward to. With this class, I fu...

Sources for WP4

One of the most vital parts of my essay are the sources that I utilize. I am using a mixture of primary sources with some secondary sources. In order for my audience to get a thorough understanding on the life of Chairman Hampton and how he affects history (in terms of understanding how society came to be and being inspired to create a change), they need first hand evidence. Throughout my paper, I use sources such as family interviews/personal accounts, newspapers, Federal Bureau of Investigation documents to begin. These primary sources give my audience a more intimate, personal view into the life of Fred Hampton. In addition, they serve as a very solid support for a claim; it is difficult to argue against firsthand evidence. Along with the primary sources, I have utilized sources that detail how the FBI played a significant role in Hampton's death. During this process, it has actually been pretty difficult to find sources for this paper. I think that further strengthens the idea...

Chairman Hampton

Image
For my topic, I decided to explore the leadership of Chairman Fred Hampton as well as his murder. What really drew me to this topic was the movie that I watched that covered some of it (Judas and the Black Messiah). The impact that Chairman Fred Hampton had concerning the Black Panthers and the Black Power movement was very significant, but many people aren’t aware of his existence let alone his contributions. Furthermore, his death was so criminally immoral that it needs to be discussed as well. I feel as though during the time of his leadership and death the media tried to paint a false narrative about this history. They tried to make it seem as though Chairman Fred Hampton’s death was deserved by only showing how he and the Black Panther Party defended themselves and their community daily. In order to gain different perspectives, I plan on utilizing primary sources such as newspapers and reports. This revisit will open the door for consideration of systemic racism through...

Sources for WP3 Black Women’s Health Disparities

Image
So far, I have some pretty good sources for my paper of Black women’s health disparities. To find them, I searched keywords such as Black women, health disparity, equity, and poverty.  For my scholarly sources, I’ve chosen Unlearning, Undoing, and Uplifting: An organized Approach to Ending Health Disparities Affecting Black Women and Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States . These two sources cover the possible causes of health disparities and various solutions to end the disparities (more specifically the latter source). Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States provides a good deal of statistical and historical context in order to get a factual view point on the health inequity that Black women endure. For the personal anecdote that I plan on including in my paper, I chose to use a personal experience. My mother was subject to health disparity, and I witnessed it and all of the results that followed. It was a sad situation, but it closely relates to my th...

Black Women-- We Feel Pain, Too

Image
For this upcoming writing project, I plan on writing about Black women experiencing health disparity . It's a very intriguing, yet personal topic to write about for me. I think the topic of Black women having a great deal of health disparity is being discussed more, however I think the discussion are mostly concerning Black women dying during birth or experiencing birthing difficulties due to improper health care. There's much more to become aware about.     As of right now, I know that Black women severely struggle when it comes to maternal health. In addition, Black women's health in general is often put at risk because their concerns are overlooked. Based on research that I have conducted thus far and personal experience, there is a racial bias that leads to the idea that Black women have a high pain tolerance (hence strong Black woman). Beyond this, Black women have a significantly higher risk at getting heart disease, hypertension, diabetes...

Source for Black Wall Street

Image
For my essay, I'm discussing the possibilities to make amends for those who have been displaced. I plan on also exploring the effects of displacement in order to further support my claims that displaced people should receive some form of reparations to make up for years of loss. In order to do that, one of my sources  discusses the long term effects of people being forcefully displaced from their communities.  One of the points from the source that I found very valuable was concerning the loss of a displaced community’s culture. According to the source, oftentimes displaced people are more or less obligated to assimilate in order to adjust to their sudden change in surroundings/community. With this evidence, I plan on delving into the psychological consequences of this (further emphasizing why reparations to help combat this are important). In addition, this source reviews one of the most noteworthy  topics in my paper: economic consequences of ...

The Destruction of Black Wall Street

Image
One particular instance of displacement that has always piqued my interest is that of what was known as Black Wall Street . Black Wall Street was a neighborhood in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was an area where Black people lived and thrived. They owned several businesses, and overall, they just had a wonderful neighborhood with a flourishing business district. There were grocery stores, barbershops, doctor's offices, real estates businesses, and schools. However, all of that came to a halt when the Tulsa Massacre happened. Not only were countless people injured and killed due to the violence but so many of the businesses and homes were destroyed, and this negatively impacted the financial status of the Black people in the area.     I find it overly disgusting that hate and racism caused the displacement of people and businesses in a community that they felt safe in. I do believe reparations could be a good solution. I know many o...
