Black Women-- We Feel Pain, Too
For this upcoming writing project, I plan on writing about Black women experiencing health disparity. It's a very intriguing, yet personal topic to write about for me. I think the topic of Black women having a great deal of health disparity is being discussed more, however I think the discussion are mostly concerning Black women dying during birth or experiencing birthing difficulties due to improper health care. There's much more to become aware about.
As of right now, I know that Black women severely struggle when it comes to maternal health. In addition, Black women's health in general is often put at risk because their concerns are overlooked. Based on research that I have conducted thus far and personal experience, there is a racial bias that leads to the idea that Black women have a high pain tolerance (hence strong Black woman). Beyond this, Black women have a significantly higher risk at getting heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and breast cancer just to name a few. Among other factors, the high risk comes from the environments they live in and their access to nutritious, healthy food.
For the next step in gathering my information, I need to do a bit more research on specific statistics regarding black women's health. I would also need to search for information regarding their lifestyles and how they are treated medically; I plan to explore the history of Black women being medically experimented on and how that affects their health disparity today.
