Sources for WP3 Black Women’s Health Disparities
So far, I have some pretty good sources for my paper of Black women’s health disparities. To find them, I searched keywords such as Black women, health disparity, equity, and poverty. For my scholarly sources, I’ve chosen Unlearning, Undoing, and Uplifting: An organized Approach to Ending Health Disparities Affecting Black Women and Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States. These two sources cover the possible causes of health disparities and various solutions to end the disparities (more specifically the latter source). Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States provides a good deal of statistical and historical context in order to get a factual view point on the health inequity that Black women endure. For the personal anecdote that I plan on including in my paper, I chose to use a personal experience. My mother was subject to health disparity, and I witnessed it and all of the results that followed. It was a sad situation, but it closely relates to my thesis. I’ll use a news article that has Black women discussing what they believe led them to having disparities in their health. In addition, some statistics I found regarding Black women’s financial statuses show that 24% of Black women experience poverty; this level of poverty greatly contributes to the health issues. Finally, one of the expert quotes I’m utilizing questions the emotions and stress as a factor contributing to health disparity for African American women. Overall, I think all of these sources will be very useful for my writing project because they each touch on different claims that I make in my thesis statement.
